The Iron

Every eye was fixed on her

The women on ice

The men strung up

Those sharp as a cleaver shoulders

Smooth and awful

Walking to me

Ready

For blood

We were midst

Alone

Covered in eyes and paper cuts

Waltzed while the rain fell

While the sky fell

The iron

In her pupils

Screamed

It

All

Meant nothing

Housewives

God is

like my father

God is an abusive husband

and we are all

battered housewives

He pummels us with pain and heartache

and disease and fear

We tremble and worry and grieve

He soothes and hushes and relieves and promises to change

We love and care and believe

Until the next black eye

Until the next bloody nose

Until…

Bombs

Rich and smart and pretty

Fancy and full of shit

Books

Films

Periodicals

Knives in handbags

Poor and lazy and misshapen

Full of shit

Noise

Drugs

Thievery

We were bombs

Ready to lay waste

With

Tethered arms

With razors at each other’s wrists

The Witness

Jesus rescue us

The blood is flowing and

The light is dying

Why have we prayed?

Is this your wisdom and mercy?

The dust and stars fill our eyes

And lungs

Desperate to see and breathe

I reach out

Why have we prayed?

Are we the forsaken?

The smoke in the distance

Is bright

The pits are deep

Nowhere but down from the top

Of this dying heap

Lord

Deliver us from the collapse

From the rubble and ruin

Of crumbled kingdoms

Why have we prayed?

Are we the witness?

I am not the jester

Nor am I the devil

I am not the speaker

Nor am I the keeper

I am not the giver

Nor am I the taker

I am merely

Fleeting breath and

Flesh which will burn away

I am neither innocent nor ignorant

Am I the seeker?

Am I the prey?

An Old Friend

BANG!

Just a second…

The shine of the officer’s badge

Authoritative posture

Hit me like a candle in backwoods darkness

The sound of the leather holster ‘round his

Waist

Familiar

Jaw clenching

Fist forming

Gun

Club

Johnny law’s grubby paws

Knifing me

“I don’t mean to embarrass you” he said

I stood there in a gray

Shirt and oil-stained denim

Naked

Up, down

Up and down

Around and around

Cupped

Into the sleeves

Under my legs

One officer flipped couch cushions

Smashed my new ball cap

“So what’s the situation here?” he asked

“The situation…?” I thought

Blood is rolling

Like the water my eggs boil in

Voices…well hers doing her best impression of me

Bombastic

Blasting and ripping through the paper thin walls

Feet…well hers stomping through the paper roofs

Of this shit apartment complex

“Yeah” I said

“Cool” he answered

“Well it seems like this can be resolved”

I thought to myself

“No Mr. Policeman, I don’t believe it can”

“You two understand that I don’t want to come back”

If he did have to make a second visit

One of us

Would have some new steel friends

We went to sleep angry

As usual

I consider him an old friend

I don’t miss him

But it’s been a few years since his

All I have is the

Constant pounding of the battlefield

The voices of war

Shells

Blood

Terror

Muted agony

Souls

All I have is the

Vibrations on the walls

The witness of war

Careless

Armless

Joyless

Muted ecstasy

Thirsty

All I have is the

Thick pain in my chest

The epicenter of war

Collapsing

Burning

Muted mortality

Uneasy

The reflections of war

I ran

I saw no choice

I had only a corner

When I wanted the world

I had only echoes

When I wanted the music

I had only you

When I wanted a reason

So much to witness

Lives to bury and become

Falls to feel

Gods to harvest

Before the sun burns out

Burns black
