Barely Breathing

In the hours that get lost between

Yesterday and today or tomorrow

Through the silence and sleep

We spoke

In the green

Lush of the sun-bleached city

We rolled our ankles

In the echo filled empty

Rooms or chattering crowds

We found ourselves

In the days of our youth

We moved unknowingly

Without recourse

We’d move instinctively

Taking all hostage and all for granted

Disregarding ramifications and relations

We accepted what arose

Those who had risen

Those who had fallen

Salute and sail on

Without caution

Without appreciation

Being the few left breathing

We boasted about our mistakes

And carried a smug look

Now and then we still puff out our chest

Barely able to breathe
